Full Description
Remains of a settlement or farmstead comprising a group of four buildings which appear to be unroofed on the 2nd edition maps. Recorded by RCAHMS site visit 1999. The remains of four buildings survive as wall footings about 1m high, the cluster of buildings surrounded by an area of boulders which may represent either field clearance or an infield boundary. Building 1 is a cottage measuring 11m by 4m with an attached threshing barn. Outside the building are three boulders, the easternmost a dressed granite block with a lead-lined hole, which may have been a weight for a cheese press. Building 2 (to the northeast of 1) measures 11m by 4m, and is joined a small building measuring 4m by 3m, itself joined by a smaller building measuring 3m by 2m. Building 3, to the southeast, is 7m by 4m. Some distance south of the main group is another rectangular building built of courses of substantial dressed stone, and measuring 6m by 4m with possible entrances on the South and Northwest. Cruickshank notes a possible reference to the settlement in 1642. Features were recorded during field survey in 2017 by CFA ahead of access track works associated with overhead line refurbishment (NJ81SW0309). Remains of six buildings, various revetting walls and a trackway were recorded.
