Full Description

Tollhouse dating from the early 19th century with later alterations. It is a single storey harled rubble building on an L-plan with rounded end facing the road. Standing building survey of the then derelict tollhouse was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services in October 2021, prior to proposed demolition. After it became redundant as a tollhouse, the building had been extended and operated as a small shop and dwelling. The original toll house is rectangular with an apsidal end towards the road, constructed of coursed rubble stone with a slate roof, conical over the apsidal end. There were two 20th century additions to the west and north (the latter possibly on the footprint of an extension shown on the 2nd edition map. Built into the higher ground behind the tool house is a bunker with concrete revetted wall in which there is a central door flanked by a window each side. The door leads to two small concrete lined rooms, the north one with two iron ventilation pipes through the roof, the south one with a small square hatch through the roof. The 'bunker' was uAlthough the exact date of construction is not known, the tollhouse was probably built between 1804, when the Aberdeen to Oldmeldrum turnpike was established, and the mid-1830s, when advertisements were placed for contractors to build toll houses on other parts of this road. The 'bunker' was used as a store for the shop: there is no evidence for military origin.
