Full Description
Mansion house, still in use, built in the late 18th century on the possible site of manor and set within a designed landscape (NJ81NE0077). Wings were later added to the house, forming a U-plan, and the west wing was later extended to the north. There are associated office buildings, which are depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. The main section of the house is two-storey and basement, with five windows and two low end wings in granite ashlar, with pronounced quoins and a small wooden portico. The interiors are panelled. The offices are a rectangular range to the north-east of the house. A Level 2 Standing Building Survey of the main house was carried out in July 2017 by Cameron Archaeology prior to proposed alterations. Various alterations and blocked openings were recorded, including scars from exterior alterations when the wings were added. A room in the basement was converted into a cold store. The wood panelling within the house may have originated from a local castle, or from Hilton House, Aberdeen. A photographic survey of the offices was carried out in 2017 prior to proposed conversion, at which time the buildings were seen to be derelict and overgrown.
