Full Description

Class I and II Pictish symbol stones. Two symbol stones which stand in a recess in the west end of the church (NJ81NE0009) are said to have been found in the glebe. They were built into the churchyard wall for a long time before being placed in their current location. The Class I stone is incised with an 'elephant' symbol above a double disc and Z-rod. The Class II stone is sculpted on one face with a Celtic cross ornamented with a central boss of spiral work and elsewhere with interlace. Beside it, and below the shaft, are the crescent and V-rod, mirror case, double disc and Z-rod and the triple ring symbols. This stone also has an ogham inscription which reads '(eottassarrhetoddeddots) maqq Rogoddadd', although this is difficult to interpret. Also in the recess are four other stones which have been found in the graveyard. They each bear a carved cross of different design.
