Full Description

House, grounds and walled garden depicted on historic OS maps. The house was designed in Neo-Greek style by Archibald Simpson 1823 for John Thorburn. There are additions by A Marshall Mackenzie in 1891, and altered by William Kelly circa 1918. It is 2-storey with a basement, the east front with 2-window pedimented ends with a pilastrade between, and the west front 2-window pedimented ends with Greek Doric half peristyles bow and a low dome. To the west of the house the historic OS maps show a large walled garden which appears to contain an orchard. The 2nd edition map shows the garden quartered by paths and with small buildings and greenhouses to the northeast. By this time two buildings had also been added northwest of the house. The house was used as a hospital during World War I, known as the Murtle House Auxiliary Hospital. Now used as school.
