Full Description

Site of a house, and garden built in the late 19th century and depicted on the OS 2nd edition map. The land at Milltimber was acquired in 1872 by John Webster, an advocate in Aberdeen. The house was set within wooded grounds with a walled garden to the northwest with a buildings set around a courtyard on its east side and greenhouses on the north side. The map also shows two lodges, and the northwest and southwest corners of the grounds. The mansion house was sold to Sir Thomas Jaffrey after 1920: Lady Jaffrey was a keen gardener and the gardens were much admired. The house was sold in the mid 1950s and subsequently demolished in the 1950s, a new house being built in the same site: at the same time the chauffeur's house was reconstructed. Standing building survey of the buildings on the east side of the walled garden was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in November 2015. The building, constructed in one phase in the second half of the 19th century, comprised the remains of the garden house and glasshouses with part of the walled garden.
