Full Description
Orphanage built in 1891 to the designs of Jenkins and Marr, commissioned by James Proctor. It comprises a 2-storey, 3-bay piend-roofed villa built as an orphanage and a small single storey L-plan steading. Above the doorway to the orphanage is a corniced rectangular panel inscribed 'Proctor's Orphan Training Home 1891'. The Listing Schedule notes that it is an unusual and interesting survival, retaining its orginal setting and some high quality interior detail. It is unaltered externally. The building could accommodate between 10 and 12 children. The orphanage was run by a house father and mother and was intended to provide the atmosphere of a family home. It was operated for some years by Aberdeenshire Council and the Aberlour Child Care Trust, and was closed in the mid 1990s.
