Full Description

Farmstead depicted on historic OS maps, and possible location of a medieval monastic settlement. The OS 1st edition map shows a group of five buildings. Four are arranged around a court, the other sited to the north and with an attached horsemill on its west side. Most had been removed by the time of the 2nd edition map which shows only the southernmost building, the house. This was derelict and roofless by 2013. Historical records indicate that a monastic settlement existed in proximity to the church (NJ75NW0002) during the medieval period at Kirkhill or Kirkton. It has been suggested that Kirkhill was the residence of the monks sent from the monastery at Deer to conduct the services at King Edward. A watching brief carried out in 2013 on groundworks for a new dwelling ona plot on the west side of the remaining building, recorded no archaeological features or artefacts.
