Full Description

Home Farm, now in residential use, of Craigston Castle (NJ75NE0002), dated 1766-1828. It is shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS map as a group of seven buildings with some enclosures. Current maps show one of the buildings have been removed and another is depicted as roofless. There are various alterations to some of the remaining buildings. There is a range of farm buildings with the central group of four free standing buildings flanking a rectangular yard dating from 1766 onwards, together with a slaughter house sited on rise to north-east. Though some of the ranges have later harling, the original building materials are red Turriff sandstone ashlar dressings with reddish field rubble and cherry-pointed coursed and squared conglomerate. All the buildings have gabled slate roofs, and most with apex ball finials. The open court is flanked in the east and west by long ranges (long elevations east and west) with the west range dated 1766 and east dated 1777. The east range has slit mural vents indicating its original use as a grain store or barn. Both have grotesque carved stone finials at the south apices, and have been adapted internally for modern agricultural use. The shorter north side of the court is filled by a byre and cart shed (1777). The south side of the court is closed by a pair of single storey cottages with dormerless attics, one is of three bays and the other of two bays, with alternate window/door/window frontage. They were constructed in 1777 (but dated 1823 or 1828, possibly recording alterations). They have small windows with timber sash and case glazing, squat end chimney stacks and slate roof. There are also re-used 16th century carved stone finials. The layout is the same as depicted on the OS 1st edition OS map of 1867. A Level 1 Standing Building Survey was carried out in July 2017 by Murray Archaeological Services Ltd prior to proposed renovation and conversion into holiday lets. The building no longer depicted on current OS maps was recorded as still being there, although ruinous. Four phases of construction were recorded. The west range was built in 1766. The slaughterhouse and the north, south and east ranges were added in 1777. The west range was altered to an L-plan in 1792, and the last two buildings (now ruinous) were added in 1822.
