Full Description

Remains of stone circle. In 1860 it consisted of a raised platform of stones and earth with 3 or 4 large stones set round it and a central smaller cairn, diameter 9.14m, which had either been hollow in the centre or previously opened. The inner cairn had apparently been raised over burnt remains, as bones, black earth etc were visible. It was partly examined by Chalmers in 1860. In 1862 the whole cairn was trenched over by the farmer, when a cist was found, 0.50m long by 0.40m wide by 0.91m deep. Within it were found urn fragments. Possibly two cremation pits were found outwith the central cairn, in one of which was found remains of an urn, burnt bone and the remains of a bronze blade. A quartz pebble, showing signs of working, was found at a later date (6/2/1892). Now only one stone remains, but there is a possible faint trace of a circular feature visible as a crop mark on a vertical aerial photograph taken in 1988.
