Full Description
Castle/Tower House. A symmetrical round-towered castellated mansion house of 19th century date designed by John Paterson incorporating a 1745 house and part of the old castle of Balquolly. The latter belonged to the Mowatts from 15th - 18th century when it was sold to Alexander Duff of Hatton. The present house is constructed of red rubble which is thinly harled, 3-storey, with a 5-window entrance frontage and a Langley-type Gothic doorpiece with shafted columns. There is a central crenellated tower. There were alterations to the upper floors by James Duncan and Son in 1901, and further alterations by William Liddle Duncan sometime between 1907 and 1911. Bee boles have been recorded in a wall in the castle grounds. Not to be confused with Hatton Castle in Newtyle, Angus (see NO34SW0003 in Angus HER). See NJ74NE0062 for designed landscape.
