Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, depicted on historic OS maps, and site of a manor. The 1st edition OS map shows a quadrangular steading, with long ranges to east and north, an L-plan range to the south, and walled garden enclosures to the west. East of this group is a T-plan building with a small buildings to the north, both fed by lades from two ponds to the north. Another small rectangular stands to the southeast of the T-plan building. The layout is essentially unchanged on the OS 2nd edition map. Some modifications and extensions have since been made to the steading, and the ponds appear to have been infilled. Surmounting the 19th century steading at Rothiebrisbane is a very fine 17th century finial, which is probably associated with a member of the Forbes family. Numbered amongst the lesser baronies of Aberdeenshire in 1598, Rothiebrisbane seems to have belonged in the mid-17th century to John Smith of Inveramsay. The OS 1st edition map shows a quadrangular steading with attached garden to the SW, and three other buildings, one of them L-shaped. To the northeast are two rectangular mill ponds. The OS 1st and 2nd edition maps also show a sculptured stone located in the southern garden. This has since been moved to Fyvie Church (NJ73NE0001).
