Full Description

Squash court building, built in 1903 for Alexander Forbes Leith. It is a covered, detached squash court building, in vigorous crenellated and bartizaned neo-Baronial style, and is harled with red sandstone dressings and finely carved inset healdic panels in Italian marble and sandstone. On the south gable is a carved Italian marble fountain basin inset in a blind gothic window (white marble cusped tracery). There is a glazed pitched roof and clerestory windows and a wooden lean-to along the west wall containing a bowling / skittles alley with a concrete floor and timber ditches. The building suffered storm damage in spring 2023. AOC Archaeology produced laser scan orthographic views of the external elevations of the building, and a ground floor plan of the interior. The racquets court was recorded by Murray Archaeological Services during conservation works carried out between September 2023 and January 2024. Standing building survey of the skittles alley was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in June 2024 prior to, and during, its dismantling and removal for conservation and return.
