Full Description

Farmstead, depicted on OS 1st and 2nd edition maps, the farmhouse on the site of the tolbooth (NJ73NE0015). The OS 1st edition shows a group of five rectangular buildings (the norteastern one annotated as site of Tolbooth) with a garden enclosure, the southernmost building with an attached horsemill. By the time of the 2nd edition, the westernmost building had been removed but two new buildings added, one on the south side of the garden. The farmhouse (Listed Grade B) is single-storey with dormerless attic (now gutted). It is rubble-built, the roof originally of Foudland slates. There are splayed red dressings, some at least not in their original positions, perhaps relict of the old tolbooth. It formerly had a 'hingin lum' at the west gable. The date is difficult to determine owing to re-used masonry.
