Full Description
Farmstead, still in use, depicted on the 2nd edition OS map as a U-plan steading open to the southwest with an additional wing projecting from the northeast face, and an L-plan farmhouse to the northwest. The buildings survive in their original from. The steading is built of granite with a slate roof. The east wing formerly had two levels (the upper a storage loft), the west wing is all on one level. An agricultural shed is attached to the rear gable of the steading. Building survey of the steading was carried out by MAS in January 2016. in its earliest form the steading comprised a west range and narrower version of the present north range, which were probably constructed in the first half of the 19th century. Some time after 1867 the steading was extended. The south wall of the north range was rebuilt circa 3 m further south to provide increased cattle accommodation, necessitating a more complex king post roof structure. The west range had contained eight double-tied cattle stalls along the west wall, with a further 12 in the widened north range (increasing the cattle accommodation from 28 to 40). At the same time a new 2-storey east wing was built with a stable for three horses, cart bay and mill with a loft above. The horsemill was removed sometime before 1924. A small building shown across the south end of the dung court on the 2nd edition map was likely to have been a pig shed.
