Full Description
Large rectangular plan walled garden and garden cottage to the north of Keith Hall (NJ72SE0041), built in 1854 by William Ramage. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as having seven greenhouses of various sizes on the inside of the north wall, two buildings on the exterior of the north wall and a rectangular building outside north north-west corner. It is in three sections, with steps shown between each section and to the entrance on the south wall. On the 2nd edition OS map, three of the greenhouses have been removed and two additional ones added. Current maps show more of the greenhouses have been removed and the building at the north-west corner has been extended. It is terraced on three levels, with the garden cottage attached at the north-west corner. It is of brick construction with ashlar doorpieces, terrace steps, coping and other dressings. To the rear of north wall there are potting sheds with three wide truncated crowstepped gables, and two lean-to glasshouses on inner wall. There are various implement and foot gates. The top terrace has T-plan steps and curvilinear walls, the bottom terrace has straight steps and curvilinear walls. The cottage is the building to the north-east, and is single-storey with attic, constructed of coursed ashlar, with a slate roof with diminishing courses, overhanging eaves with decorative bargeboards, and a massive shouldered stack rising through pitch of roof. It has a plain single-storey addition. A Level 1 Standing Building survey was carried out in April 2017 by Stuart Farrell prior to proposed alterations and extension to the potting sheds. A single square brick chimney, possibly for a boiler house, was recorded at one of the potting sheds. The remaining greenhouses appear to have mainly gone out of use by the late 1960s.
