Full Description
House and farmstead, still in use. Fingask House (B Listed) was built in 1837 for Thomas Elmslie, woollen manufacturer, and is a quietly dignified merger of the vernacular and the classical. Two white-harled storeys, three widely set windows and a slightly projecting pedimented centre bay with Ionic-columned porch in wood make a statement both calm and precise. The back wing of 1923 represents the rebuilding of an earlier, possibly 1821 from date stone, house. To the west of the house is a farmstead, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as roughly T plan with a possible horse mill attached the north elevation. Today, it survives as an L-plan, with the northwest wing having been removed. To the north of the steading is a pump, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. To the west is a walled garden, dating from the late 18th and early 19th Centuries (C Listed). The wall is constructed of boulder rubble, is of varying height, and is partly coped. There is a semi-elliptical arch in the wall over the drive, flanked by plain niches. The circular shell of a former bathhouse survives in the southwest corner, rubble-built with Gothic brick arches. There is also a baluster sundial dating from 1851 and a small, older, sundial with a tapered shaft. North of the walled garden, at the end of the driveway, is a lodge dating to the 19th Century, built in the Gothic style with a piended roof. At the lodge and at the second entranceway, to the east, are 19th Century gates (B Listed). The East pair are dated 1824, and the West pair 1827. They are heavy rusticated gate piers topped with urns and ball finials.
Period Notes
Built in 1834; back wing built 1923 which is a rebuilding of an earlier attempt (possibly 1821, from date stone); gatepiers 1824-7; sundial 1851; walled garden wall said to be part 18th and part 19th C.
