Full Description

Remains of cottages, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. The range measures 18.5 m from west-northwest to east-southeast by 5.2 m transversely over stone walls up to 0.8 m in height. The Ordnance Survey Name Book, dating to about 1866, describes Backstyles as 'Two thatched one storey cottages on the farm of Leylodge, the property of the Right Honourable Earl of Kintore'. A walkover survey was carried out by CFA Archaeology in April 2024 (NJ71SE0166), prior to the proposed development of a hydrogen plant. The survey recorded the remains of a long rectangular drystone building, measuring circa 26 m by 5 m west-northwest to east- southeast. The structure is made from granite stones and boulders which are coursed but not well dressed. It is divided into two apartments, roughly two-thirds and one-third of the length. The wall height is 1 m at its maximum. At the west-northwest end there is poorly preserved walling which may be the remains of an earlier structure, this measures approximately 4 m by 4 m and 0.5 m in height, and is made of smaller stones than the larger building. There is also a section of walling and a line of stones which appears to be related to field clearance.
