Full Description
Remains of at least six hut circles and associated field system of sinuous earth and stone banks and clearance cairns. The hut circles vary in size from 8m to 20m in diameter and generally stand circa 0.4 m high. Within the system are a number of cairns 8-10 m in diameter, which may be burial cairns and a possible henge. The henge (NJ 7745 1675) is an oval bank measuring 20 m by 17 m externally with two opposed entrances, 1-1.5 m wide, on the long axis. The banks are up to 5 m wide and 0.6 m high with very little stone visible. A stone outer face is visible in places and one possible section of inner face suggests a wall 1.5 m wide. There is also a possible burnt mound at NJ 7724 1666 sitting on the edge of a marshy area. It is 7 m in diameter and up to 0.9 m high. Limited investigation revealed small angular stones beneath peaty turf. A circular stone-walled enclosure (NJ 7739 1686) 11m in diameter with no apparent entrance survives up to 0.8 m in height. On the west side of the interior is a sunken area 3.5 m in diameter that appears to be stone lined. This feature may be of a later date than the hut circles. In the north area rig and furrow overlies part of the system. A long plantation bank of later date cuts through some of the field banks and is in turn cut by a later track.
