Full Description

Remains of paper mills, established in 1852. The complex ceased operation in 2009, and the land and buildings have been sold on for redevelopment. The mill complex was dominated by a 5-storey brick tower. Other buildings were mainly one and two-storey rubble-built structures with some modern additions. Part of the power for the mills was derived from two water turbines, and the site of two large waterwheels could still be seen in the 1970s. In 1971 it was noted that there were two 'Belliss and Morcom' high-speed engines, a two cylinder single vertical 'Ashworth and Parker' engine which formerly drove a paper mill of 1928 and a 2-cylinder simple horizontal engine which drove a 'Scott Mason and Betram' calender of 1885. In the repair shop, the lathe, shaper and planer were driven by a 6-spoke all-iron high breast bucket wheel, 1.22m by 3.05m. There was still a hand-propelled, narrow gauge railway system in the mills in the 1970s. Part of mill was quite extensively damaged by fire on the 27th August 1979.
