Full Description

Midmar Castle, built circa 1570. The main part is Z-plan, built by George Bell master mason circa 1570-5. Approximately square 4-storey central part with 6-storey circular battlemented tower and 4-storey and attic turreted square tower. The northwest wing is 2-storey with dormer heads, probably 17th century. The east wing is 2/3-storey, probably circa 1733, with small bathroom addition in 1796. Harled, small raised terrace in courtyard. Internally, the first floor of the main part is plain with original ceiling and a good early 19th century cast iron stove by Adam Anderson. There are original late 18th century bathroom arrangements in addition. Good original panelled rooms with original plasterwork on second and third floors. The east wing has good panelling of circa 1733 with late 18th century additions, and elegant dining room at ground floor probably circa1796, Pompeian red with windows in semi-elliptically arched recesses. Considerably repaired in 1840. Small bath house adjoining round tower now removed. It was re-harled circa 977, recently restored. A sundial outside the south face of castle, dating to early 18th century, is of hollow dial type with ball finial on square baluster. There is a B-listed 18th century outbuilding to the north-west (NJ70NW0148) and an A-listed 16th-17th century walled garden adjoining the castle to the east (NJ70NW0149).
