Full Description

Mansion House. King Robert (Bruce) granted the barony of Skene to Robert Skene in 1318. The north part of the house was originally a circa 14th Century towerhouse with three vaults, which was remodelled in 1680 when the vaults were removed and the centre part added, both rubble-built. The south wing was added circa 1745. The house was remodelled in the mid 19th Century into a large Scots Baronial Mansion of 3-4 storeys by Archibald Simpson for the Duke of Fife. The terrace has two dolphin fountains, sculptures and a fine table sundial. There is a well in the garden dated circa 1850, a Renaissance square-arched feature with pointed dome in circular basin. The stable-block has been converted into houses (NJ70NE0170) and the walled garden to the north dates to the 18th-19th centuries (NJ70NE0168). See also NJ70NE0137 for designed landscape.
