Full Description
Memorial to the Banff Strike Wing, located in a lay-by on the A98, commemorating the men and women who served with the multi-national Banff Strike Wing at RAF Banff between September 1944 and May 1945. It is a granite memorial stone 2.74 m (9 ft) tall with a 0.9 m (3 ft) square base. Under the command of Group Captain the Hon. Max Aitken, the mixed Mosquito and Beaufighter units mounted attacks on German surface vessels and U-boats in the North Sea and along the Norwegian Coast. More than 80 aircrew were lost flying with the Strike Wing. The memorial has an inset brass plaque detailing RAF Banff Strike Wing's wartime role, and small plaque below records that the memorial was erected by the RAF Banff Memorial Trust, September 1989. The rear of the memorial bears another plaque displaying the crests of the six Strike Wing squadrons, silhouettes of a Mosquito and a Beaufighter and a plan of RAF Banff during the period the Strike Wing was active. Surrounding the memorial are trees for each of the six multi-national squadrons which formed the Banff Strike Wing. Full transcription of memorial held in AAS Digital Archive. Alongside the main pillar is a second stone with a plaque commemorating the achievements of Number 14 (Pilot) Advanced Flying Unit based at RAF Banff for 15 months during the war and which trained 2136 pilots. A wooden seat opposite the memorial was presented in 2007 to the RAF Banff Association in memory of the airmen and women who served at RAF Banff.
