Full Description
Farmstead and former 17th century lint mill depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition OS map shows the mill (annotated as Old Lint Mill) as two connected L-plan buildings with a lade on the east side. The southern building has since been removed, the remaining L-plan building converted to residential use. It is a 2-storey and loft, 3-bay L-plan mill building., built of rubble, with tooled rubble dressings and a modern pantile roof. The 3-bay west elevation has a projecting wide gabled bay at the south with large modern ground floor opening. There is a raised first floor entrance at the east approached by a footbridge oversailing the former lade, and a tooled ashlar wheel gable in the east elevation. The mill is divided from the neighbouring farm by a rubble garden wall in the centre of which projects the canted rear of a garden house. The mill was used as a cattle shelter (when the large entrance was probably made) until converted to a house in the mid 1980s. The farmstead to the south is shown on the 1st edition OS map as a U-plan steading open to the east-southeast, with possible remains of a horse mill on the west side. To the east is a mill pond, dam and sluice, with a well and watering place further south. West of the steading is a walled garden. The layout is essentially unchanged on the 2nd edition OS. The building on the east side of the court has since been removed and there have been further alterations.
Period Notes
