Full Description
Former meal stores and smithy, depicted on historic OS maps. The meal stores date from 1793 and 1796, with later additions. They were used to store grain, either received by the burgh as rent or bought in times of hardship for distribution to the poor or for sale. The 1823 John Wood map shows three units, two on the footprint of the existing buildings, the third on the east side. On the OS 1st edition a small extension is shown on the east side and the building is annotated as a smithy. By the time of the 1929 edition of the OS map the westernmost of the three units had been removed. Standing building survey was carried out by MAS in April 2016 ahead of proposed conversion. They comprise two parallel single storey buildings with loft, with a 20th century parallel range at the east end. They are harled, the earlier buildings with tooled ashlar margins. The west range has a reused apex bellcote, which probably came from Banff Grammar School (NJ66SE0471), whence it was removed in 1802 when the school building was heightened. A watching brief was carried out in March and July 2017 by MAS during internal ground works and the removal of the external harling. The watching brief on the reduction of the floor level in the western section of building identified the old floor timbers as re-used railway sleepers. During the demolition of the forge two stamped bricks were recovered, suggesting early 20th century and later repair. The only feature recorded while the floor level was reduced was the foundations of a dividing wall. During the removal of the harling entire rybats around the doors and windows with tool marks for the harling to attach to were revealed.
Period Notes
Minutes of the Town Council 1793 record payment of £107 for building of the meal houses, and in 1796 Minutes note that a 'gimal to hold 500 bolls meal is to erected adjoining the present meal houses'.
