Full Description

Former bank, built in the style of David Rhind in circa 1865. It is a three-storey, five-bay Italianate building, with single-storey, two-bay wings slightly set back from the main frontage. It is constructed from squared dark local whinstone, with a generous use of ornate contrasting ashlar sandstone dressings. The centre entrance is under a heavy consoled balustraded balcony, with a fronting first-floor centre window. The ground-floor windows are corniced, and there is consoled and corniced first floor fenestration, with small second floor windows, all with moulded jambs and plate glass timber sash and case glazing. There is a slate roof, with quoins and a deep modillioned cornice below a blocking course, surmounted at intervals by urn and ball finials. There are also corniced end and ridge stacks. Inside there is a wide stair case with cast-iron barley-sugar twist balusters. Otherwise it has been much altered to accommodate the police station. Rubble and brick walls enclose an L-plan rear garden. Set in one of the walls at the back is a carved stone ('SAY IN A MAIR ON ME THAN YOV VALD I SAID ON YE A S') and an armorial stone.
