Full Description

Three storied building within the historic area of Banff, recently a cafe, now Local Authority offices, dating from 1764-67, adjacent to the Town House and tollbooth (NJ66SE0061). The exterior is harled, with painted ashlar margins, corniced end stacks, and a slate roof, piended at the corner. A watching brief and structural recording was carried out in 2005 by Murray Archaeological Services during conversion of the building, then the Mercat Cross Cafe, into office accommodation. The interior of the building was gutted prior to any archaeological recording taking place. This recorded details of the south wall, including original fireplaces, and foundations of the west wall. Remains of a cobbled surface were revealed in the eastern extension, which had been made by building a blocking wall between the 36-38 Low Street building, the Town House and a now semi-demolished building in the backland to the east. The cobbled area has been interpreted as the yard surface of the original pend between the three buildings. The cobbles cannot be dated, but are secondary to the backland building, which from cartographic evidence dates from the early-mid 19th century. No earlier pend surface was observed below the cobbles. The building contains former cells, now in use for storage, potentially relating to the former Town House and tollbooth prison wing adjacent to the south.
