Full Description
War memorial, built in 1920-21. The Banff war memorial stands on the east side of Castle Street opposite the junction to Seafield Street. It is a plain, slightly tapering rectangular cenotaph of pale grey granite blocks standing on a one step base. There is a simple small cross on the front face near the top. On either side of it shallow steps lead to a shallow hemicycle wall built of similar granite with some contrasting darker granite with bull-faced blocks built behind it. Two groups of five plaques record the names of fallen for World War I, and set in outer ends of hemicycle are a further two plaques with the names of the dead from World War II. The centre portion between the two groups of five is of chequered granite blocks with voids revealing glimpses of Banff Bay to east. There is a plaque recording the laying of the foundation stone by HRH The Princess Royal on 27 May 1921. The memorial was unveiled 12 November 1922 by Sir George Abercromby Bt, DSO (commanding officer of the 6th Battalion Gordon Highlanders). Full transcription of memorial held in AAS Digital Archive.
