Full Description

House built circa 1753 by Admiral William Gordon on site of old Carmelite Monastery. Two-storey and attic over raised basement, 5-bay regularly fronted house. Squared local whinstone frontage with painted ashlar margins, harled rear and return gable, the rear ashlar margins un-painted. Artisan Gibbsian keystoned doorpiece with double-leaf raised and fielded 6-panel door, the upper panels removed and glazed, approached by steps oversailing raised basement. Regular fenestration, the ground floor windows longer than those on the first floor. Glazing is 12-pane in timber sash and case windows. Rubble side elevation. Three carved stones set into the wall: a fine 1634 coat-of-arms, the royal arms of Scotland, the Virgin and Child (arms of the burgh of Banff) dated 1628 and a Virgin and Child, which appear to have been taken from the market cross when it was removed in the 18th century. Low coped front garden wall (former railings missing) with end piers with cast-iron lamp standards. Latterly used as a hotel.
