Full Description

Former brewery and warehouse, now in industrial use. It dates from the mid 18th century, perhaps incorporating earlier work. It is probably the isolated building above the harbour shown as a malt barn on the G Taylor plan of 1772. It is a substantial large L-plan block, range with with return elevation to Battery Green and 17 bays to Castle Street (some openings blocked) with two tall round-headed keystoned arches with blocked imposts. Harled rubble, ashlar margins. Mainly 4-pane glazing in fixed timber lights in street frontage, varied elsewhere. There is a later shop with enlarged window slapped between round-headed pend archways. Probably originally a warehouse, being close to harbour. Cumberland's troops are said to have been lodged in premises after the 1745 uprising. Now used for small industrial units it still bears the sign of the 'Sang and Coy' brewery.
