Full Description

Midden situated on an elongated grass-covered dune/mound. During excavation at a depth of 1 m a layer of dark coloured sand containing a quantity of shells, bone, pieces of charcoal, and fragments of burnt pottery, was found. Above this were 7-8 alternating layers of sand and dark midden material containing shells. Topmost layer was circa 1 ft (0.3 m) below ground surface and contained a great abundance of shells, bones and a piece of glazed pot. The stratification of the deposits seemed to indicate intermittent visits rather than continuous habitation of the area. Nothing was seen during site visit in 2022 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey, the location now the site of Inverboyndie pumping station. An elongated mound on the coast edge rests on ground containing modern material and is probably a spoil mound from excavations of the pumping station.
