Full Description
Former corn mill and associated kiln, dated 1778, saw mills, and mid 19th century miller's cottage. The corn mill is a 2-storey building of coursed rubble construction with some galletting at ground level to the west. The kiln adjoins the mill, forming a 3-bay range built into the bank. In the west elevation is a segmental arch to the centre at ground level, with date and initial plaque above reading 'WLB 1778' This is flanked by other windows, with three smaller windows to the first floor and smaller ventilation openings between. At the east elevation, the kiln is to the right, with a door at ground level and window above. The ground is banked to the first floor of the mill to the left. There is a loading door at first floor level breaking the eaves in a piended dormerhead, and small ventilation openings under the eaves. The doors are boarded, while the windows half 4-pane glazing with pivot shutters below. The mill is roofed in grey slates, with coped skews, and has a mutual skew dividing the mill and kiln. At the time of listing (1994), some hoisting machinery and kiln ovens survived internally. The miller's cottage is a single storey, 3-bay T-plan cottage, constructed of random rubble with Turriff red sandstone dressings. It has a door to the centre, flanked by sash and case windows with a 4-pane glazing pattern. It is roofed in grey-blue slates, possibly renewed, with three skylights in the roof. It has ashlar coped skews, bracketed skewputts, and corniced stacks with decorative cans. On the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, two water-powered saw mills are also shown lying to the southeast of the cornmill.
