Full Description
Remains of a castle dating from the 16th century which belonged to the Meldrums. It is on a Z-plan, a block with two towers diagonally opposite. That at the southwest angle still stands, containing the entrance in the re-entrant angle and inside the remains of a wide square staircase, now removed, with a small guard room under it. The basement of tthe main block contains two cellars and passage to the buildings in the northwest, now removed. The cellar has a private stair to hall. The basement walls are well defended by loopholes. The first floor is occupied by a hall measuring 10.36m by 5.79m. The castle was extended to the north with a round tower at the northwest angle of the existing building and may have formed a courtyard but nothing left to form an opinion. Now very ruinous with the north face of the main building partially collapsed.
