Full Description
Estate buildings, remains of designed landscape and site of Carnousie House. Carnousie House was a 19th Century country house, shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, now demolished and replaced with a modern bungalow situated on part of the footprint of the earlier house. The rear wing of the original house, formerly the Gardener's Cottage or wash house, still survives (NJ 6739 4974). It is single storey, comprising storage, washhouse and workshop, constructed from random rubble stone with pink stone quoins around window and door opening s and at the gable. To the north east of the house site is a rectangular steading or stables with central courtyard (NJ 6743 4977), a laundry to the south-east (NJ 6745 4961) and a walled garden with associated buildings to the south-west (NJ64NE0089). On current maps, only the north wing of the stable is shown as roofed, while only one of the garden buildings is shown roofed, with remaining buildings shown as unroofed. To the south-west is an associated lodge (NJ64NE0088), and another to the north (NJ65SE0111). Photographic recording of the washhouse was carried out in July 2021 ahead of proposed conversion and alteration.
