Full Description

A mill, with lade to the west and east, is depicted on the OS 1st edition map. To the north is a U-plan building, with a small enclosure, probably a garden, to its south, and small building to the northeast. The small building had been removed and the U-plan range reduced to an L-plan building set within an enclosure by the time of the 2nd edition map. Another building had been added to the northwest. Only this northwesternmost building, now ruinous, appears on current maps. The remains were recorded during walkover survey in 2022 by Mott Macdonald in advance of 33kV refurbishment works (NJ64NW0147). The building is rectangular, 9 m by 5 m, with two entrance frames on the east, one with wooden lintel and frame in place. It stands circa 5 m high at the highest point at the southwest gable. The gable at the northeast side has collapsed leaving debris of slate slabs and stone. The window is blocked with two large boulders/stones on the west side. There are no clear signs of the mill building but the entire area contains large concentrations of stones, debris and roof slates. Probable remains of the lade were also identified, comprising a stone lined channel.
