Full Description
Farmstead, no longer in use and category C-listed farmhouse (still in residential use). The farmhouse dates from the 18th Century or earlier. It is a two-storey house on a T-plan. The roof was altered in the late 18th or early 19th Centuries. May have been built on the site of an earlier manor. The farmstead, to the south west of the house, may also date to the 18th century. It is shown on the 1st edition map as a square plan steading with central open courtyard and horse mill on the west side. The horse mill is not shown on the 2nd edition map, and by the 1940s the open courtyard had been roofed over. There are the remains of an 18th - 19th century dovecot to the north east of the house (NJ63SE0027). Standing building survey of the steading was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services in February 2020. It is of rubble stone construction with red sandstone quoins and arches to cart bays, the roof of slate with ceramic ridge tiles and ventilator tiles. The north range was used as a byre and the interior contained the remains of 18 double-tied cow stalls along the north and south walls. The south range appears to have been in part stables: a loft ran the fill length. The east range was also formerly a stable or byre with loft above, the interior having been refitted with concrete pig pens. The west range was used as a mill, Z red sandstone lintel of a now blocked opening in the east wall to the court, has the incised characters 80 (or D) and A, possibly indicating a date of 1880 and the initial of the then tenant Adam Singer. A later 19th century building abutting on the north side may have been an engine house for the mill, replacing the horsemill. Documentary evidence suggests there there was a farmstead by the late 18th century: the mill building with massive door lintels may be of this period. The south range may also be early, as it appears to have been built before the east range which abuts it.
