Full Description

A farmstead called Upper Rashieslack is depicted on the OS 1st edition map of 1867 as lying on the east side of a burn. It is L-shaped with the angle in the northeast corner. A horse mill lies against the north side. To the south is another small single building orientated northeast-southwest. Immediately west of the farmstead appears to be another building within a small enclosure. On the west side of the burn is another small L-shaped building with an attached enclosure. About 160m to the south beside the burn is another small building within an enclosure. By the 2nd edition edition the farmstead has been enlarged with the edition of another range added on the west side, forming a U-shaped farmstead open to the south. The building immediately to the west has gone. The building lying on the burnside to the south has gone but another disused building is visible on the east side of the burn. Nothing is depicted at these locations on present maps though some foundations may survive. Walkover survey in 2022 by Mott Macdonald in advance of 33kV refurbishment works (NJ64NW0147) recorded a large quantity of spread small and large stones with occasional cairns within the area of the farmstead. Another clearance cairn, 2 m in diameter and 0.3 m high, was recorded at NJ 61988 35108.
