Full Description

Remains of a farmstead and enclosures, part of the Bennachie Colony, which had its origins in the 1830s, and was established on 'commonty' land shared between nine estates. The OS 1st edition shows three buildings, with a well to the south, set in narrow fields. The northwestern building appears roofless on the 2nd edition OS map: the others had been altered and two small buildings added to the southwest. A sales brochure of 1932, provides particulars of Boghead of Tullos Croft including details of the cottage which contained three rooms and the steading which comprised two small byres, a barn and further 'timber and felted' outbuildings. It is also known as Esson's Croft, after the last tenant. In 1932 when the croft was let to Mr George Esson, the farm was about 7 acres. Gorge Esson, who died in May 1939, was the last of the Colonists. Remains of two buildings, possibly originally part of a single range, have been recorded by RCAHMS site visit 1999. The cottage measures 10.3 m by 5.2 m over walls 0.6 m thick standing up to 1.7 m high, with a central entrance in the east side and a small outshot at the south. The building to the north, which measures 9.6 m by 4.2 m over mortared walls 0.5 m thick and up to 1.7 m high, is divided into two compartments each with an entrance on the east.
