Full Description

Country house, now in use as a hotel. It is a complex house of several dates. The original house at the west probably dates from the mid to late 17th century, although the wheel stair in the south-east re-entrant angle is dated by Dr. Simpson to circa 1490. The infill of the north-west re-entrant angle is dated 1675. The ogee-capped tower on the south of the house was added in 1841 by Archibald Simpson for Col. Knight Erskine. A further addition on the west dates from circa 1860, and there are some smaller early 20th century additions and alterations, also by Simpson. The original section of the house is a stepped 3 to 4 storey L-plan, with jambs not at right angles. The north-east jamb has a circular angle tower. The north-east wing is probably from the same date as the south-west jamb, which is three-storey and has a square, pyramid-capped angle tower. There is a large neo-Jacobean addition to the east, with a three-storey balustraded entrance tower on the east and the 1841 circular ogee-capped tower on the south. All sections are harled, and Simpson's work has moulded details. There is a coat of arms dated 1605 over the porch, which comes from Balhalgardy. A 17th century sundial stands in the garden (NJ62SE0063). See NJ62SE0044 for surrounding designed landscape.
