Full Description
Turf-covered footings of a rectangular building. There is a double entrance on its east side, one on either side of a central division. It is situated at the east side of a sub-rectangular enclosure 30m by 21m. The entrance to the enclosure is in the east, opposite to and connected to the entrance of the house. The foundations are now greatly reduced and difficult to make out in some areas, with trees growing within parts of the enclosure. A number of trenches were excavated in June - August 2018 as part of the Bennachie Landscapes Project. This showed that stonework survived to a depth of 1m. The walls were well made, circa 0.8m wide, and appeared to be too wide for a single-storey structure. A sloping plinth close to the entrance appears to confirm that it had an upper storey accessed via an external staircase. One cell lay to each side of this 'vestibule', each of the three doorways with a well-laid threshhold stone, the 'vestibule' paved with large irregular flattish stones, the adjoining cells possibly only with floors of beaten earth. Within the building a stone from a window-sill or linted contained three square-sectioned holes for window bars. The building appears to have been dismantled carefully, and although it had clearly been slated, very few fragments of roofing slate were found. A well-laid stone path led to the entrance. A reference to a post-reformation hospital on the estate could possible relate to this building, supported also by the absence of 19th century pottery. Most of the finds dated to the late 17th to 18th centuries.
