Full Description

Farmstead, depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition shows an L-plan steading with attached horsemill on the north side, small building on the east and garden enclosure to the south. By the time of the 2nd edition another building had been added on the east side of the court and a pump is also depicted. All but the south part of the west range have since been removed. A whin-mill of a peculiar construction comprising two circular stones, was recorded at the farm in 1925. The pivot stone had been removed from its original position and now lies fully exposed to view. When working it was sunk to a depth of 0.91m in the soil with only 30cm exposed. The smaller stone was placed on the shaft when necessary to give additional weight to the larger stone in order to hasten the pulping operations. There was no trace of the stone when RCAHMS visited in 2003.
