Full Description

Cottage, in use, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. Built circa 1800. Single-storey cottage, with 2-window and centre door and tripartites with original glazing. Constructed of rough ashlar red granite with grey dressings, with broad gables and tall roof. Said to have been erected originally as a girl's school. Described in the sale particulars of Tonley Estate in 1947 as follows: 'SITUATION - In the village of Kirkton, on the banks off a pleasant rippling burn. The land includes a useful enclosure for garden produce and some rough woodland. The house is an attractive double-fronted cottage built in granite with slate roof, and the accommodation, which is approached through the porchway entrance, includes sitting room, two bedrooms, kitchen and scullery. The buildings comprise workshop and hen house'.
