Full Description

Farmstead and mill, still in use, depicted on the 1st edition map of 1847 as an L-plan steading, an L-plan mill building, farmhouse and three other rectangular buildings. On the 2nd edition map of 1888, new buildings have been added to the north and south. Today, the mill building is shown as roofless, but the steading survives and has been extended to an S-plan. The farmhouse also survives along with one of other rectangular buildings, and new buildings have also been added to the complex. Described in the sale particulars of Tonley Estate in 1947 as follows: 'The farm house is placed in a sheltered sunny position, substantially built of stone with slate roof. The accommodation provided is 3 bedrooms, sitting room, kitchen, milk house and pantry. The farm steading, placed near to the house, is similarly built and contains hen house, coal shed, straw barn, threshing barn, threshing floor, engine house, meal mill house, 2 pig stys, cart shed, 3-stall stable with hay loft over, root house, byre for 6, byre for 18, calf box and open court. To assist the working of this farm a valuable area of woodlands is included in the glen, marching alongside the road and containing much useful beech, ash and other timber'.
