Full Description

A farmstead is shown at this site on the 1st edition OS map, in the form of an L-plan steading with attached horse-engine and three small buildings to the east. These have all been removed by the 2nd edition map which shows a large U-plan building and a sub square building. Both of these buildings survive today in their early form. Described in the sale particulars for Tonley Estate in 1947 as follows: 'A substantial detached granite house with slate roof, standing in a commanding position on the junction of the main Aberdeen road and secondary road leading to Kirkton Village. The house contains 14 rooms in all and is at present divided into four apartments let to various tenants. In view of the shortage of farm workers' cottages in this district, Whiteley House provides a useful substitute for this purpose. The gardens surrounding the house are small but sufficient. The outbuildings include separate wood stores for each tenant, 2-bay cart shed, communal wash house, etc'.
