Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, depicted on the 1st edition OS map of 1867 as a U-plan steading open to the south with a horse-mill attached to the west face. On the 2nd edition map of 1888 the horse-mill is not shown, while the steading has been extended to form a square plan steading with central open courtyard. Today, the steading survives but has been extended westwards and a rectangular farmhouse has been added to the south. Described on the sales particulars for Tonley Estate in 1947 as follows: 'The farmhouse stands in a sheltered position with a lovely outlook across the valley. Built of stone with slate roof, it contains 2 bedrooms, boxroom, sitting room, kitchen, scullery, and milk house. The farm steading, also built of stone, and includes hen house, wash house, coal house, 2-stall stable, straw barn, threshing barn, granary, byre for 14, 2 loose boxes, hay house, engine house, turnip house and dairy'.
