Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, depicted on the 1st edition OS map of 1867 as a U-plan steading with extended north wing, with a rectangular building to the east and two more to the south. By the 2nd edition map of 1888, the steading had been altered to a U-plan with the removal of the extended north wing. Noe the steading has once again been extended northwards, but only two of the other three rectangular buildings survive. Described in the sale particulars of Tonley Estate in 1947 as follows: 'The farm house, of superior design, stands in a good position, sheltered by the adjoining woodlands. Built of stone with slate roof, it contains 3 bedrooms, boxroom, sitting room, dining room, kitchen, scullery, milk house and pantry. The farm steading, also built of granite with slate roof, includes root house, byre for 25, stable for 3, straw shed, threshing barn, granary, loose box, potato store and implement shed'.
