Full Description

Farmstead, in use, depicted on the 2nd edition OS map as a U-plan steading open to the east with a rectangular building to the east, farmhouse to the north and possible pond to the south. Today the farmhouse survives, and the west wing of the steading appears to survive but the rest of the steading, the third building and the possible pond are not shown. Described in the sale particulars of Tonley Estate in 1947 as follows: 'The land is arable, well drained, and in good heart. The field adjoining the burn on the northern boundary provides useful rough pasture. The farmhouse, standing in a sheltered position and protected by mature standing timber, is stone built with slate roof, and contains three bedrooms, sitting room, kitchen and milk house. The farm steading is similarly built and includes coal shed, 2-bay cart shed, wash house, tool shed, byre for ten, byre for eight, threshing barn, straw barn, granary, water mill, small root house and 3-stall stable'. Photographic recording was carried out in March 2021 ahead of proposed replacement.
