Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as a U-plan steading open to the S, with a sluice to the south and a farmhouse and garden area to the northeast. Today, the steading has been altered to an E-plan building while the farmhouse has been extended on its east face. Described in the sale particulars of Tonley Estate in 1947 as follows: 'The farm is a typical small Aberdeenshire holding situated in the lee of Tonley hill land, sheltered, and easy of approach from the Kirkton-Tillyfour highway. The land is well arranged in suitable enclosures with most fields fronting the country road. All the land is arable and in good heart. The farm house, situated in the centre of the farm, is built of stone with slate roof and comprises 3 bedrooms, sitting room, kitchen, milk house and small scullery. The farm steading, similarly built, contains byre for 21, straw barn, threshing floor, granary, 2 pig stys, turnip house, hay house, 3-stall stable, workshop and loft'.
