Full Description
Former Parish Church, no longer in ecclesiastical use. It stands on a small knoll a short distance from the original church and graveyard (NJ61SE0012). The church is of Improvement-period rectangular form and was built in 1789 to accommodate the growth of the local population. The four round-headed windows are original and the east wall was built in grey ashlar with cherry-cocking, the remainder of the building being in granite rubble. The plain bellcote has a Mowat bell. A memorial tablet on the west wall, below the upper deck, reads: ‘In memory of Archibald Ross. Farmer of Cairnfold in this Parish. Formerly Overseer and Gardener at Castle Fraser, who died September 27th 1830, aged 76. A sincere Christian, a faithful and conscientious servant, exemplary in every relation of life. This tablet is inscribed to his memory, As a mark of esteem, and attachment, by Colonel Chares Fraser.’. The roof is slated. The building was neatly extended in 1983 with the addition of a hall to the west. The last service of worship was held on the 16th June, and the church was sold in July 2024. There were formerly framed Rolls of Honour within the church, but these were removed prior to its sale. One memorial, to Archibald Ross, formerly overseer and gardener at Castle Fraser, remains.
