Full Description
Farmstead, now disused but still standing, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. The farm has its main axis on a north-northeast to south-southwest alignment, and consists of a T-plan building with an L-plan building to the south. The principal building, the L-plan building, originated as a lintmill, and was built circa 1748-9 by James Fordyce (Arbroath) - a datestone is inscribed 'SAG 1749'. Some alterations and additions were made 1899, commemorated with a datestone inscribed 'SAG 1899'. It is a 2-storey coursed granite building with a segmental chamfered arch and loft gablet over. A dam, sluice and bleaching green are shown to the S. A standing Building Survey was carried out over the building by Cameron Archaeology in 2010 in advance of the proposed renovation of the steading to form a dwellinghouse. Two phases of building were identified, but no evidence of its use as a mill was seen to survive in the standing building. Documentary research by J Gilliatt records that the lintmill was later used as a bobbin mill - bobbins were being made in Monymusk by the early 1870s. The bobbin mill was run first by James and John Main, later by John Main 'a bobbin maker and wood merchant employing 20 men and 6 boys' and William Mathieson, 'a master bobbin tuner'. Newspaper reports of fires (1873 and 1879) indicate that in addition to the mill building there was a separate boiler house and kiln room for drying turned goods. By 1891 it had gone out of use as a bobbin mill and was later converted into the Gloies farm steading by William Mathieson.
